Teachers and students across Emporia continue to get used to the new school year now two weeks in.
On KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 program Tuesday morning, USD 253 Superintendent Kevin Case said a big push, as outlined in the school boards goal setting sessions has been on meeting the social-emotional needs of students.
The district is also receiving an additional $1.1 million in base state aid this year from the Kansas Legislature. Case says a lot of investment this year has come in the area of teacher salaries.
The district has hired 47 new teachers for the new school year.
In addition, an ongoing building needs assessment is looking into the security needs of its buildings thanks to an $84,500 state grant to improve infrastructure and safety training across the district. Case says the district is currently in the process of scheduling meetings to get input from the community on what they’d like to see with that. Those dates will be announced later in the school year.
