Thursday marks one year since the body of Jesus Avila-Galvin was found in a field south of Emporia. The investigation continues into how he died and who killed him.
Avila-Galvin’s body was found Sept. 6, 2017, in a burned-out car near Roads 160 and T. He was 19 when he was killed.
Sheriff Jeff Cope says investigators will continue to process evidence and follow leads, with the investigation involving Emporia Police, Emporia State Police and Safety, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Office of the Kansas Fire Marshal — as well as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms at one point.
At this time, no suspect information has been released. Autopsy results have confirmed homicide as the means of death but other details have not been divulged.
A $2,000 reward remains in effect for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people involved. If you have information on this case, Lyon County Crime Stoppers is one option for you to relay that anonymously to authorities. On a recent Talk of Emporia, Crime Stoppers Coordinator David Holmes encouraged people to use www.p3tips.com or the P3Tips mobile app to submit tips — whether in the Avila-Galvin case or others where they may have information.
Holmes says the anonymity aspect is big for potential tipsters, and the software designers took that to heart.
The Crime Stoppers number is 342-2273, and Holmes says a recent partnership with CSI Tips has augmented the confidentiality aspect.
People can also call the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office at 342-5545 or the Kansas Bureau of Investigation at 800-KS-CRIME with tips in the Avila-Galvin murder investigation.
