Cloudy skies could not dampen the spirits of participants in the annual Relay for Life of the Flint Hills Saturday morning.
Over $38,000 was raised as of late Saturday, with more money coming in.
Begun in 1985, Relay for Life is a year-long fundraising effort which helps support resources for the American Cancer Society. Event organizer and cancer survivor Cherie Crisp explains what some of those numerous resources are.
Each year residents form teams which work together to raise funds year round. Saturday’s event got underway at 11 am with team members making their way around the handmade track inside of the Lyon County Fairgrounds Anderson Building.
One participant was Emporia resident Paula Roper (Rope-Er) who has been involved with Relay for Life for over 15 years.
Volunteer Margie Combs says she has had friends and family both win and lose their battles with cancer and adds staying positive can be challenging at times.
The event included several booths set up by Emporia State nursing students and volunteers, music, carnival games, a silent auction, and the annual survivors and caregivers dinner and walk.
