A local organization is encouraging the community to turn out this week for those struggling with thoughts of suicide and depression.
Part of National Suicide Prevention Week, Beacon for Hope Suicide Prevention is hosting a candlelight vigil this Thursday, a prelude to its second annual Hope Links Us Together suicide prevention walk on Saturday. Beacon for Hope Executive Director Melissa Kurtenbach.
Kurtenbach says her organization has helped spread awareness to mental health issues and perhaps the most defining statistic has been in the increase of calls from Lyon County to the suicide prevention hotline.
That statistic may be a bit shocking, but Kurtenbach says it’s a good sign that more people are taking advantage and seeking help whether that be for themselves or for a loved one. Those figures are according to Headquarters, Inc. out of Lawrence.
Saturday’s Hope Links Us Together walk and silent auction is happening at Jones Park. Registration begins at 10 a.m. with the walk beginning at noon.
