LEROY — Streets and facilities have finally dried up in LeRoy after strong rainfall caused several closures and postponements.
Roughly 3 inches of rain fell on the town Friday morning and did not let up throughout the day. The strong rainfall led to the closure of several streets including C Street near LeRoy Elementary as well as Ninth Street and one lane of Kansas Highway 58 for about an hour. The flooding was primarily caused by drainage issues due to LeRoy receiving 2-5 inches earlier in the week.
LeRoy Street Supervisor Aaron Copeland tells KVOE News there was no real damage caused by the flooding and each of the streets were reopened by 7 am Saturday.
Traffic flow was not the only thing affected by the heavy rainfall as USD 245 Southern Coffey County officials decided to postpone the high school football game and homecoming activities scheduled for Friday. Superintendent Russ Mildward says the field was virtually unusable due to drainage issues from the combination of Friday’s rainfall mixed with the totals from earlier in the week.
Friday’s game against Hartford was rescheduled to Monday evening. Mildward adds while the football field was left a mess and schedules had to be readjusted, there was one bright side to the day.
Homecoming activities for Southern Coffey County High School have been rescheduled for Sept. 21.
