Showers and storms early Friday morning dropped close to half an inch of rain in some spots and are giving the atmosphere a more fall-like feel right before we officially change seasons.
Here at the KVOE studios, we received around 0.40 inches of rain from showers and thunderstorm activity. Other totals:
*Antler Ridge: 0.60 inches
*Emporia Municipal Airport: 0.30 inches
*Allen: 0.30 inches
*Between Hartford and Olpe: 0.50 inches
*Olpe: 1 inch
Fall officially begins shortly before 9 pm Saturday, and after sweating through highs at or above 90 degrees just about all week, much cooler and more pleasant conditions are now settling in. Highs Friday will struggle to get into the 70s and weekend high temperatures will be in the 70s as well. TV-13 meteorologist Doug Meyers says there could be some temperature creep over the next two weeks, but the extended heat we’ve had this week may well be done.
The rain also comes as drought continues for most of the KVOE listening area, with the northern half — essentially from Interstate 35 and US Highway 50 to the north — still in either severe or extreme drought. Moderate drought to abnormally dry conditions can be found south of those highways, with Greenwood County and far south Coffey County now cleared from drought status for the second straight week.
