Safe Kids Emporia has its final child seat safety check lane of the year Saturday.
Folks are encouraged to stop by Emporia’s Fire Station No. 2 at 15th and Industrial from 9 am to 1 pm. Safe Kids certified technicians will check child seats, adjust them as needed and offer advice to parents and guardians so their child seats are installed correctly each and every time.
This comes in advance of National Child Passenger Safety Week next week — and ahead of National Seat Check Saturday on Sept. 29. The National Child Passenger Safety Board says a child under the age of 13 is involved in a crash every 33 seconds across the country. Also, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says properly-installed car seats can reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers. However, the number of child deaths in traffic crashes has risen steadily since 2014 — and more than a third of kids in those crashes weren’t restrained at all.
