Scott Whittington has stepped down from his position as chief executive officer of Lyon-Coffey Electric Cooperative effective immediately.
Whittington served as the head of the electric cooperative the last 13 years. Director of Member Services Mike Tweedy says Whittington is retiring for personal reasons. Tweedy also said Whittington has been “a positive force in bringing the electric cooperative forward in a time when politics and environmental issues have made it difficult to deliver electricity to members at a reasonable price.”
A letter started circulating this week saying Whittington embezzled funds from the cooperative. KVOE News has received a copy of the purported statement from Whittington to board president Robert Converse. Tweedy tells KVOE News the letter is not true and said Whittington is moving to be closer to family.
Recently, Whittington oversaw the move of Lyon-Coffey’s main offices from Burlington to BETO Junction. He also leaves at a time when Lyon-Coffey has announced its intent to merge with Radiant Electric Cooperative based in Fredonia later this year. If approved by both sides in November, the new legal entity would be known as 4Rivers Energy Cooperative.
Assistant Manager Mark Doebele has been elevated to interim manager. KVOE News has reached out to Whittington for comment on his decision.
