The community of Hartford came together Saturday for “A Day to Honor.”
The day-long community festival saw a host of activities including a morning bike ride and color run, breakfast and food vendors on Main Street. Co-ed mud volleyball became the popular spectator sport in the park by midday and culminated with a ceremony to honor veterans with a free-will dinner in the park. Organizer Bettina Shank says the event was inspired after Hartford Harvest Days became obsolete.
The USD 252 Southern Lyon County Honor Flights have become a hot commodity, taking two groups of veterans each year to Washington D.C. to visit some of the most iconic American landmarks. Army veteran and Emporia Lions Club President Gary Post says he went on a flight last year after the encouragement of some other local veterans.
Final totals are pending. Lyman says it takes about $600 per veteran to send them on the Honor Flight with each flight costing about $25,000. To learn more about how you can become involved with Honor Flight, call the USD 252 Southern Lyon County district office at 620-392-5519.
