Safe Kids Emporia held their final child seat safety check lane of the year this weekend.
The fourth and final check lane of the year came in advance of National Child Passenger Safety Week this week. President of Safe Kids Jeff Ilk says they experience a wide range of questions during the check lanes, the most common being whether parents should use a seatbelt or latch system. He says before those questions can be answered, a thorough evaluation of the vehicle needs to take place.
Volunteers from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Emporia Police Department, Emporia Fire Department and the Kiwanis Club were all on hand to help with the installation and safety checks.
Ilk says all technicians on hand go through a great deal of training before assisting with the check lanes.
The National Child Passenger Safety Board reports a child under the age of 13 is involved in a crash every 33 seconds across the country. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations also says properly installed car seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers.
