The Emporia Rescue Mission will be changing locations before next spring. The question is where it will land.
On KVOE’s newsmaker segment Wednesday, Director Lee Alderman said longstanding discussions between the mission and the owners of Kwik Shop at 12th and Merchant have led to what he called an “extremely fair” offer on the property, but a new home has to be ready for the mission by March 1. Alderman has been looking for a facility that can house 16-18 men that’s either in or near downtown.
Terms have not been announced.
As that work continues, Alderman says Abundant Harvest needs new windows to replace its current single-pane windows.
In addition, both facilities need clothing with winter not that far away. Alderman says the mission needs sizes of large, extra large and double-extra large for coats as well as work boot sizes 10-12. Abundant Harvest, meanwhile, needs all sizes of winter clothing and boots. Alderman says he’s constantly amazed by the traffic at both locations.
The Rescue Mission, meanwhile, has been at or near capacity for several years.
