The Emporia School Board took no action after an executive session for the purpose of evaluating Superintendent Kevin Case Wednesday night.
The board met for 10 minutes with no action taken. It was the first such evaluation by the board this school year and it followed a number of evaluation meetings held last spring, culminating with a failed motion last March to terminate Case’s contract. It is unclear at this point if the board will continue the evaluation process at a future meeting. A separate executive session was also held Wednesday evening with the board motioning afterwards to terminate the contract of an unnamed employee. That motion passed 6 to 1 with Susan Brinkman being the lone board member to oppose the motion.
In other business, the board accepted updates to board policies, with the exception of a policy recommendation to remove cost control authority on goods or services. The policy change had been recommended by the Kansas Association of School Boards. The board also approved a motion to hold an informational meeting with vendors to discuss network connections and access points at Emporia High School and Emporia Middle School with plans to bid on upgrades in January.
In addition, the board received brief updates on school redesign efforts underway at Logan Avenue and William Allen White Elementary. Board members followed with questions as to why sixth through eighth-grade students at Turning Point Academy aren’t being included for the redesign effort. Superintendent Case noted with only six middle school students, that conversation would be on hold until potential redesign efforts in the future, possibly as early as 2021 at Emporia Middle School. The Turning Point Academy Advisory Committee plans to discuss that further in the coming weeks.
More information on school redesign was shared during last week’s Emporia Showcase available below.
