One man faces a November sentencing date after being convicted earlier this week for sexually abusing a child.
Joe Louis Stewart was convicted Tuesday of two counts of aggravated indecent liberties against a 10-year-old child at the time of the crimes. Stewart was originally charged with aggravated criminal sodomy with an alternate count of aggravated indecent liberties, as well as a second aggravated indecent liberties count dating back to 2016. Once Stewart’s defense team rested its case, prosecutors dismissed the sodomy charge.
The jury took just over an hour to return its guilty verdicts in the case.
Sentencing is set for 9 am Nov. 13. Lyon County Attorney Marc Goodman says this qualified for sentencing under the state’s Jessica’s Law provisions, meaning Stewart would serve at least 25 years in prison.
Stewart was convicted in 1992 on charges of aggravated sodomy and aggravated burglary dating to a 1992 case. He was discharged from prison in 2004.
