Street construction crews have been busy in Emporia.
Current pavement on Commercial Street between Kansas Avenue and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks has been milled or ground down, and the parking areas along that stretch of Kansas Highway 99 have also had an asphalt overlay installed. The driving lanes will have a similar pavement overlay in the next few weeks. Drivers should expect lane shifts and temporary closures, both for Commercial and connecting side streets.
In two areas of town, traffic is now back to normal. Underground Utilities crews have repaired a water main that broke Thursday on Merchant near Eighth and they have made the related street repairs. Meanwhile, traffic on West 15th is back to normal after a car drove into the Westar Energy Hatcher Street substation Sept. 23. The street was closed through Friday.
As we have mentioned, Monday is when repaving work begins on Industrial Road near the Interstate 35 bridge. For Industrial Road, there will be lane closures and traffic adjustments as concrete pavement panels are removed. For southbound I-35 traffic, drivers will have to use a signed detour. For northbound I-35 drivers, traffic can exit onto Industrial as usual.
