The Emporia community will take steps this weekend to find a cure to Alzheimer’s.
The annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s is coming Sunday afternoon. The event is a two-mile walk that serves as both a fundraiser for the Heart of America Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and an educational opportunity for those unfamiliar with Alzheimer’s disease.
Event coordinator Cindy Miller was a recent guest of KVOE’s Newsmaker and laid out the schedule for Sunday’s walk.
As of Wednesday, the event has raised $9,853 of its $25,000 goal with 103 participants and 15 teams currently registered.
Apart from the walk itself, the event has numerous other activities including one special ceremony which Miller calls the most emotional part of the afternoon.
The ceremony involves flowers of different colors one of which honors the caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients. Miller says it is just as important to honor the caregivers as their job is a 24/7 obligation to their loved ones battling the disease.
For more information on the walk email Cindy Miller at Cmiller@ALZ.org or call 785-271-1844. The Walk will begin at 2 pm at the Lyon County Fairgrounds Anderson Building. To register, visit this story at KVOE.com where we have provided a link to the event website.
