Earlier this fall, Cargill Meat Solutions pulled over 130,000 pounds of ground beef from store shelves across the country due to possible contamination. A separate contamination issue has now led a second meat producer to issue a much larger recall.
JBS Tollesen, Inc., out of Tolleson, Ariz., has recalled over 6.5 million pounds of various “raw, non-intact beef products,” including ground beef, according to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. Potential salmonella contamination is the listed reason.
The items were packaged between July 26 and Sept. 7 and shipped nationwide shortly afterward.
As of last word, nearly 60 people from 16 states have reported getting sick. Salmonella can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within 12-72 hours of eating a contaminated product.
A retailer list has not been divulged, and it can take anywhere from a day to two weeks for that to be made public. Locally, Country Mart, Good’s Cash Saver and Dillon’s are not affected. Walmart and Aldi have not listed whether they are affected, although several Walmart product labels are listed in the recall information.
