The areawide heavy rain from earlier this week came too late to have any impact on the US Drought Monitor.
The latest map issued Thursday remains virtually the same as it has the past two weeks. Extreme drought covers the north half of Lyon County, as well as far north Chase and much of Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties. Drought conditions in southern Lyon County range from abnormally dry to moderate drought, and Greenwood County and southern Coffey County remain drought-free.
Area residents picked up anywhere from 0.80 inches to 2 inches of rain Wednesday night into early Thursday. Current projections have another 3-6 inches of rain possible areawide from Friday night through Tuesday.
