As more roads slowly reopen in Lyon County following rampant flooding last week, the damage assessment is being evaluated.
During KVOE’s Newsmaker 2 program Monday, Lyon County Emergency Management Director Jarrod Fell said that process can sometimes take longer than expected as the Highway Department looks at several different variables.
No official word on a damage assessment has been announced, but Fell says preliminary estimates are upwards of $100,000 or more. Once that has been determined, county officials will be able to determine if they meet the threshold for reimbursement through the Federal Emergency Managment Agency (FEMA). Fell says the flooding last week served as a teaching moment to how they communicate those closures to the public.
At one point, close to 40 or more roads were closed due to high waters last week, including parts of Highway 99 both north and south of Emporia.
