WICHITA, Kan. – With three weeks until the general election, the three leading candidates in the race for governor debated the issues Tuesday at the Kansas Association of Broadcasters convention.
Democrat Laura Kelly, Republican Kris Kobach and Independent Greg Orman spoke for close to an hour on some of the most pressing issues from school funding, labor and immigration concerns, transparency in government and where they stand on taxes. Each candidate tried to position themselves as the best candidate for the job.
Kobach, the former Secretary of State says his top objectives will be cutting taxes and spending through attrition, stopping a “culture of corruption” in Topeka and reducing illegal immigration in Kansas.
Kelly, a state Senator from Topeka promoted herself as a strong leader who says she’ll work as a bipartisan governor and “slam the door” on the past eight years of leadership.
Johnson County businessman Greg Orman says he won’t be bound by liberal or conservative politics if elected as the next governor.
Recent polls have shown Kobach and Kelly in a virtual deadlock to win the Nov. 6 election while Orman is polling about 10 percent. If you missed any part of the debate, it is archived in the Audio Vault at KVOE.com.
