Educational redesign for two local schools may have an impact on the education model of Turning Point Academy.
This was a major topic of discussion for USD 253 Board of Education members during their meeting Wednesday evening. With William Allen White and Logan Avenue Elementary Schools looking to redesign their education model, there is a question of whether Turning Point would fit into the equation.
During the meeting Superintendent, Kevin Case presented an update from the TPA Advisory Council on how to help shift the model of TPA to fit with the redesign. He says ensuring that all district staff “buy into” the redesign is the most important aspect of the process.
Case adds once William Allen White and Logan Avenue present their final model for redesign in December the board will be able to adjust the placement of Turning Point.
Also on the agenda, the board received an update on the activities of the Communities in Schools (CIS) program. CIS provides students and families with assistance of all kinds including transportation, counseling and food services.
District Executive Director of Elementary Education Vicki Schweinler says the program has stood out as they lend assistance to any and all students with no requirements or qualifiers.
Last year the program received a grant which allowed them to implement their services in two elementary schools, Logan Avenue and Walnut. Representatives were optimistic that board members are seeing the positive impact of CIS within the district and that may help aid in funding when the grant expires next year.
Superintendent Case also reported back to board members on information and ideas collected from a recent trip to the KSDE Annual State Conference earlier this month.
Two executive sessions also took place to evaluate the performance of Superintendent Case. No action was taken on any items.
The board’s next meeting will take place Nov. 7 at Marry Herbert Education Center.
