The general election across Kansas next Tuesday isn’t the only election of note taking place next week.
Members of the Lyon-Coffey and Radiant electric cooperatives will meet separately Monday to determine whether the two agencies should consolidate. The Lyon-Coffey meeting will be at 6 pm at the business office, 2731 Milo Terrace in Lebo, while Radiant members will meet at 6 pm at US 400 and Jewell Road near Fredonia.
The original plan is to maintain the workforces of both current businesses, putting the total employment at almost 50. The cooperatives expect around $9 million in cost savings over the next decade but there would be no changes in electric service for the nearly 13,000 customer accounts in 14 counties.
The new legal entity would be called 4Rivers Energy Cooperative. The respective boards would combine to govern and current business offices in Lebo, Emporia and Fredonia would continue to operate.
This merger needs the approval of two-thirds of the customers and members.
