Emporia High School recognized the outstanding academic achievement of several students Tuesday morning.
In 2017 over 1.6 million students across the country took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholar Qualifying test which entered them into the National Merit Scholarship Program, a nationwide competition for recognition and awards. Of those students, 34,000 are recognized as Commended Scholars including EHS senior Isabelle Alvarado.
This is the sixth consecutive year EHS has had a National Merit Scholar. Principal Dr. Britton Hart explains EHS takes great pride in student achievement in any capacity.
Along with being a National Merit Scholar, Alvarado was also recognized as a KU Honor Scholar, along with 29 other students, and a 2018-19 National Hispanic Scholar. During the ceremony, Dr. Hart explained Alvarado is an example for her fellow students on how important it is to apply themselves in the classroom.
When asked how it felt to be seen as an example for her classmates Alvarado says.
After high school, Alvarado plans to attend college and pursue a degree in forensic science.
Also recognized during the ceremony were 30 students designated as KU Honor Scholars. These students are selected for being in the top ten percent of their class.
