An investigation is underway after an inmate was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead at the Lyon County Jail on Tuesday afternoon.
According to a press release from Sheriff Jeff Cope, A Lyon County ambulance was called out shortly after 1:30 to assist detention personnel with an inmate who was found to be unresponsive. The inmate has been identified as 43-year-old Christopher Mejia of Emporia.
Mejia was later pronounced dead at the jail.
Mejia had been arrested just Tuesday on suspicion of criminal trespass, according to Undersheriff John Koelsch.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation was notified and is conducting the investigation. KVOE News has reached out to the KBI for updates. Foul play is not suspected.
