An Americus man was hospitalized in Emporia after a crash Monday evening.
Lyon County Deputy Kevin Lee says Anthony Johnson was southbound on Kansas Highway 99 when his pickup left the highway for currently unlisted reasons near the highway bridge over the Neosho River. Lyon County Dispatch tells KVOE News Johnson, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was able to get out of the truck before it went into the river.
Lee says Johnson had minor facial injuries but was still taken to Newman Regional Health for observation and possible treatment. Johnson was the only person in the truck when the crash happened.
Besides deputies, Emporia-Lyon County EMS and the Fire Department’s Water Rescue Team responded to the call.
8:45 pm Monday: Pickup goes off K-99 into Neosho River; driver hospitalized
One person was hospitalized in Emporia after a crash just north of town, but the early indications are the crash situation could have turned out much worse than it did.
The crash happened around 7 pm at the Kansas Highway 99 bridge over the Neosho River, or about a mile north of Emporia. Lyon County Dispatch says the driver of a southbound truck crashed but was able to get out of the truck before it went into the river.
The driver was taken to Newman Regional Health afterward. His name has not been released.
The Sheriff’s Office says the driver was apparently the only person in the truck. Further details are pending.
Lyon County deputies are investigating. Emporia EMS responded and later called the department’s Water Rescue Team to the scene to help the investigation.
7:45 pm Monday: Agencies respond to K-99 crash at Neosho River
Multiple agencies have converged on the Kansas Highway 99 bridge over the Neosho River after an apparent crash.
Lyon County deputies, Emporia-Lyon County EMS and the Emporia Water Rescue Team were dispatched to the 1800 block of Highway 99. Additional details, including the number of vehicles and patients, are pending at this time.
