The founding city of Veterans Day marked the 65th annual celebration of the holiday with a slew of activities Saturday.
Despite some of the coldest conditions for Veterans Day activities in years, area residents still turned out in droves for activities like the parade and memorial service. Sherry Willard, a chief master sergeant for the Kansas Air National Guard, was the guest speaker at the memorial service.
With this being the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, Army National Guard Command Sgt. Major Steve Harmon referenced the local effort to develop Veterans Day almost 70 years ago as well as ongoing efforts to honor veterans for their service and sacrifices.
The memorial service also included Taps, a 21-gun salute, prayers and music.
A breakfast, ham and bean feeds and the second annual Veterans Honor Crawl were also on the schedule Saturday.
This was the 16th annual year for a local All Veterans Tribute, with the core of activities taking place over the past week-plus. Emporia held its traditional Veterans Day activities Saturday with the formal holiday on Sunday.
