Light snowfall has caused some travel headaches across the KVOE listening area Monday.
Winter weather advisories remain across parts of the KVOE listening area, including Lyon County, with up to 3 total inches of snow expected through late morning after light rain Sunday. TV-13 meteorologist Doug Meyers says travel could be an issue through the overnight hours, even with accumulating snowfall likely over across the Flint Hills.
City, county and KDOT crews are out clearing and treating roads at this time. Authorities are concerned about possible re-freezing with overnight lows dipping to the low teens, below the effectiveness temperature of most road treatment materials. City Underground Utilities Supervisor Mike Dvorak says city crews will put down traction materials if icing is still a concern as temperatures dip below the mid-20s. Emporia Police are maintaining normal crash reporting procedures at this time.
Two people were hurt in separate crashes along the Kansas Turnpike in Chase County on Monday morning. Shortly after 1 am, 20-year-old Mikaela Pike of Liberty, Mo., hit a slick spot and crashed into the center barrier wall near mile marker 111. She was hospitalized afterward. Around 7 am, another one-vehicle crash developed at mile marker 106. One person was hospitalized after that wreck. Further details are pending.
Coffey County, meanwhile, has closed Embankment Road between 12th and Lake Road and over the John Redmond Reservoir dam. The county can’t treat that stretch of road because it’s considered new construction, so the road will be closed until further notice.
9:15 am Monday: Two hospitalized after separate weather-related injury crashes in Chase County
Hazardous driving conditions have set up along the Kansas Turnpike and other area highways.
Light snowfall through the Monday morning hours, coupled with light rain for much of Sunday afternoon and evening, have made travel slick. That has resulted in “quite a few” non-injury crashes along the Turnpike as well as a pair of injury wrecks in Chase County.
One person was hospitalized after a one-vehicle crash that happened shortly before 7 am near mile marker 106, 21 miles southwest of Emporia. Additional details are pending.
Separately, a Missouri woman was hurt and hospitalized after a crash shortly after 1 am. 20-year-old Mikaela Pike of Liberty, Mo., hit a slick spot and crashed into the center barrier wall near mile marker 111.
Emporia, Lyon County Highway Department and KDOT crews are now out treating or clearing roads.
Visibility will be reduced, especially for county roads and highways, as northerly winds gust between 15-30 mph through late afternoon.

One vehicle is involved and additional details are pending. The Turnpike Authority says the highway is slick and there have been “quite a few” non-injury crashes already Monday morning.

6 am Monday: Winter weather advisories continue; two Greenwood County districts delay school
For the second time in less than a week, area residents are contending with the travel impact of light to moderate snow.
Winter weather advisories now cover much of the KVOE listening area with up to 3 inches of snow expected through late morning after light rain Sunday. Flash back to Thursday, when most of the area picked up 3-6 inches of snow without any rain beforehand. Travel could be slick across a more widespread area Monday as a result, and Lyon County and KDOT crews are out Monday morning. County Engineer Chip Woods:
City of Emporia crews have not been called out yet.
TV-13 meteorologist Doug Meyers says travel could be an issue for much of the morning.
Officially, an advisory continues for Lyon, Coffey and Osage counties until 6 pm, while Chase and Greenwood counties are in a separate advisory through 9 am. Advisories for Morris and Wabaunsee counties ended at 6 am.
Currently, two area school districts — USD 386 Madison-Virgil and USD 390 Hamilton — have announced delays. Both districts are delaying the start of school by two hours. Buses will run accordingly.
