Several superheroes from the Lebo community came together on Saturday to support local hero, Andrew Barr, who suffers from major health issues.
Andrew Barr is 8 years old and has suffered through seizures since he was an infant. Andrew’s mother, Lori, explains his daily struggles.
Besides the gene mutation, Andrew is also diagnosed with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, a rare and untreatable form of epilepsy only found in about two percent of known cases. These health problems have been the cause of many medical bills the Barr family faces, with Andrew’s seizures now lasting up to an hour and traditional medications proving ineffective.
People from the surrounding communities came dressed as their favorite comic book characters to help the Barr family out with Andrew’s medical costs as part of “Superheroes for Andrew.” Kelly Freund of Lebo helped to put on the superhero-themed event for the Barr family. Freund planned out the activities, such as the 5K run/walk, the taco bar luncheon, and the silent and live auctions.
Fundraising totals are pending, but Freund says the event was a success.
Andrew has two siblings; a sister, Kylee (age 10) and a brother, Carter (age 2). Along with parents Kyle and Lori, many more members of Andrew’s family and friends came to support their little hero. The family was overwhelmed with support and cannot thank everyone enough, as Andrew’s father, Kyle says.
A total count of the donations is still in the works, but the family and friends were blown away by the amazing turnout. This was a big step forward for Andrew in his hopes to find answers.
