The state’s unemployment figures for October are a shade lower than they were a year ago.
The state’s October unemployment number was 3.3 percent, level with September but also down slightly from the 3.5 percent in October 2017. Seasonally-adjusted nonfarm job estimates and private sector jobs, a subset of nonfarm jobs, were both up month-to-month.
Locally, Emporia’s jobless market dipped below 3 percent, settling at 2.9 percent. That’s down from the 3.1 percent in September and 3 percent from a year ago.
Lyon County’s jobless rate is also 2.9 percent, down from the 3.1 percent in September and level with last year.
Areawide, most counties were up marginally, including Chase, Greenwood, Morris and Osage. Coffey and Wabaunsee counties had slight declines. Chase County still has the lowest area unemployment at 2.4 percent. Coffey County has the highest at 4.2 percent.
