With families across the country preparing to dine together this week, the Lyon County Extension Office has offered some tips to keep in mind before dinner is served.
When it comes to preparing your Thanksgiving dinner there are several do’s and don’ts that residents should be mindful of in regards to preparing and cooking your meals. A common question among many each year is the amount of time it takes to fully cook a turkey.
Extension Office Family and Consumer Sciences Agent Rhonda Gordon says the proper cooking time is highly dependant on the size of your turkey.
Gordon adds when cooking your turkey it is unwise to rely on the pop-up thermometer inside your bird. Instead, it is better to use a proper meat thermometer to check temperatures as the reading are more accurate.
Another area to keep in mind is your prep area. Gordon says it is important to not reuse utensils and clean as you go.
If you are planning to fry your turkey do so outside and away from your home or garage, make sure it is fully thawed out before placing it in oil and never leave it unattended while it is cooking.
