The season of giving is upon us and in that spirit, the Salvation Army’s 127th annual Red Kettle Campaign will be kicking off this week.
The opening event for the campaign will be at Hobby Lobby this Friday at 1:00 pm. This will kick off a season’s worth of charity events all going towards those in need.
Being the 127th annual Red Kettle Campaign, this event has taken place for quite some time. Captain Deb Thompson gives an overview of the lengthy history.
During the holiday event, there are certain days that you’ll want to be sure and donate on. Doubler Days are a large part of the campaign. These are days where all donations made in the day will be matched by donors, some anonymous and some not.
Thompson encourages the community to dig a little deeper and give anything they can, as even pocket change does add up. Other donation items are requested as well.
Locations for donation drop-offs are The Salvation Army building and Walmart in Emporia.
While the campaign does have some hired employees, over 90 percent of the people involved are volunteers. Thompson says that more volunteers are always welcome.
The impact from the Salvation Army is felt all through Emporia. Thompson spells out where some funds go to help.
Also coming up for the Salvation Army is their Black Friday sale, where clothing will be up to 50 percent off, with the exception of their Christmas items. A grand prize of a Christmas meat will also be given away.
Locations for the red donation kettles will be at Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Sutherlands, Walgreens, Dillons, Country Mart, Graves, and Good’s Cash Saver. The smaller counter kettles can be found at various stores throughout Emporia.
