One man convicted in the murder of an Emporia man at a local hotel nine years ago recently had an appeal denied by the Kansas Court of Appeals.
Samuel Llamas was one of two defendants convicted in the shooting death of Omar Flores at Emporia’s Rodeway Inn in September 2009. Following his conviction in 2010, he was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for aiding and abetting felony murder.
Llamas’ most recent appeal involves complaints of prosecutorial misconduct, ineffective counsel and abuse of discretion by the trial court. The Court of Appeals says ineffectiveness concerns did not meet state legal standards and district court did not abuse its discretion in denying a request for a new trial.
