This week, Bunge North America gets ready to build a new rail spur for Emporia’s crush facility.
City Engineer Jim Ubert updated KVOE listeners during Monday’s Talk of Emporia. He says Bunge’s contractor has started preliminary work, including site clearing.
By putting the spur across Peyton Street, Ubert says the city has to make several adjustments for underground utilities.
That will start in a few weeks as soon as permitting is approved by Burlington Northern Santa Fe.
Ubert says discussions between the city and Bunge had been going on “for a while” before Bunge received railroad’s blessing. Once that happened, planning moved relatively quickly from the city’s standpoint. The project received final city approval earlier this year.
Work itself may go through much of spring 2019, so the affected area of Peyton will be closed for the duration of the project.
