Faith Schreiner has been using a new bionic forearm and hand for just over a week, and she’s understandably thrilled to have that opportunity.
She’s also understandably sore because wearing it every day has tired out some of her arm muscles, but she’s not complaining. She says there have actually been two learning curves as she adapts to the new arm.
Schreiner joined KVOE’s 7:05 am newscast Tuesday to update listeners after a fundraising blitz at the end of October. Led by a matching amount from station owners Steve and Bobbi Sauder as well as a GoFundMe page and a fundraiser at Coach’s Grill and Bar, area residents donated over $19,000 in just over a day to finish fundraising for the better than $40,000 arm.
Schreiner has been told to treat the arm like she would a cell phone, which means she has to keep it as dry as possible. She also can’t drop it from high places or use extreme force to lift or move items.
Schreiner is grateful for the arm because it lets her pursue her dream of being a veterinary technician.
Schreiner also said there were medical concerns, like overuse of her left hand possibly leading to carpal tunnel syndrome or elbow and shoulder issues.
