Local law enforcement and rescue workers were out in force at a couple locations Monday, but there was no emergency involved.
Instead, Emporia Police, Emporia Fire and the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office took part in the rescheduled Badges United fundraiser for the Salvation Army’s ongoing Red Kettle fundraising effort. Badges United was originally set for Dec. 1, but bad weather that morning postponed the event to Monday.
Deputy Zach Shafer says it was a good event for a worthy cause.
Police Chief Scott Cronk says Badges United reflects the collaborative effort between the agencies, and in a way it reflects the partnership between local authorities and the community.
Fire Chief Jack Taylor says the Salvation Army offers immediate help for people or families in need — and the agency also works hand-in-hand with emergency personnel whenever disaster strikes.
The rescheduled event comes at a busy time for the kettle campaign. The latest Doubler Day is Tuesday, with Ryan Emrick matching up to $1,000. On Friday, EVCO will match donations. Next Monday, Olpe’s Knights of Columbus will match up to $500. Anonymous donors are matching funds on both Dec. 19 and 21.
Salvation Army Capt. Deb Thompson will have Badges United numbers and an overall campaign update during Wednesday’s Newsmaker segment at 7:15 am on KVOE and KVOE.com.
