Structural integrity tests continue at a downtown Eureka business following a partial roof collapse early Thursday.
Eureka Fire Chief Doug Williams says crews checked wall stability at the Colangelo and Taber CPA building, 201 North Main, after the southeast corner of the roof fell about 30 feet shortly after 6 am. Early indications are there was no structural damage to the building, but Williams says the 100 block of West Second and the building frontage area on Main will still be blocked off until testing is complete — and there is no timetable for completing that work.
The cause for the fall-in is unclear. Williams says the building was in the path of an EF-3 tornado that ravaged downtown Eureka in late June, and there is at least some possibility the structure suffered some tornado damage that went unnoticed until now. Other potential causes have not been announced.
8 am Thursday: Part of Eureka building falls 30 feet to ground, investigation underway
Eureka Fire and Greenwood County Emergency Management are urging city residents to avoid the area near Second and Main after part of a building collapsed early Thursday.
Emergency Management Director Levi Vinson tells KVOE News a roughly 30-foot-by-4-foot section of brick fell roughly 30 feet at the Colangelo and Taber CPA building, 201 North Main. The affected brick was above the two-story building’s roof line.
Vinson says it does not appear there was any structural damage to the building and there were no injuries. One person was inside when the roof partially collapsed but got out safely.
The cause of the brick collapse is under investigation.
At this time, the 100 block of West Second is closed to traffic. Further details are pending. We’ll keep you posted on KVOE and KVOE.com.
