Formal charges have been filed in Greenwood County and in Oklahoma after a woman allegedly left her autistic grandson at a highway rest area near Beaumont a few weeks ago.
Greenwood County District Court says 68-year-old Janie Gill now faces charges of child endangerment and interference with law enforcement in Kansas. Gill was recently charged with child neglect in Rogers County, Okla., according to KVOE’s television partner WIBW in Topeka.
A first appearance date is pending. Court proceedings in Oklahoma will determine when Gill will go to Eureka for proceedings, according to District Court.
The nonverbal autistic teenager was left at the US Highway 400 rest area near Beaumont possibly Nov. 28. He was discovered before sunrise Nov. 29 without money, medication or food. He is in protective custody at last word.
Gill has denied abandoning the teenager. She has said the boy’s parents died of drug abuse and she requested unspecified help caring for the teenager but received none.
