The flooding of many local areas in September are still having lasting effects as the Sertoma Club’s miniature train will be undergoing renovations from the damages.
Due to the flooding, the train’s annual schedule had to be cut short, preventing their holiday runs. Sertoma Club member Ron Douglass talks about the flood damages.
The amusement ride celebrated its 60th birthday last summer, and over the decades there have been other catastrophes, but this is the largest one in recent history.
There is no major progress on the renovations going on now, but funds are being raised to build a metal bridge for easier water flow and concrete railroad ties are being constructed to help with the gauge issues.
Douglass says that it is important for the train to be safe and ready by the start of the season, because of the happiness it brings the children.
Donations for the updates can be given to the Emporia Community Foundation, as well as on their Facebook page. The regular schedule begins in June, lasting until August. Run times are 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays; as well as from 9:00 am – 11:00 am on Thursdays.
