It will be Wednesday at the earliest before formal charges are announced after a pair of chases in and around Emporia last week, and it may be that long before additional information comes out about a shooting in town a week ago. However, a reward has been announced as the investigation continues in the case.
Formal charges are pending against 29-year-old Chelsea Brooks of Topeka and 37-year-old Jon Buchanan of Emporia after their arrests Tuesday. Brooks was arrested on suspicion of felony flee and elude and at least one count of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer after allegedly leading a high-speed chase from Emporia to western Osage County. Buchanan was arrested on existing warrants along with suspicion of flee and elude, resisting arrest and methamphetamine possession after a short foot chase in commercial and residential parts of downtown Emporia.
A third person, 29-year-old Robert L Jones, was arrested after a surveillance operation at 115 Sylvan linked to the Dec. 16 shooting of one man in the 800 block of Sylvan. Jones was arrested on warrants unrelated to the shooting investigation.
Both Brooks and Buchanan have been termed “persons of interest” in the Sylvan Street shooting. A 39-year-old man was found on the curb in that block with at least one gunshot wound and was taken to Newman Regional Health for treatment afterward. His name has not been released and investigators have not updated his condition since the shooting.
As the investigation continues, Lyon County Crime Stoppers has announced a cash reward of up to $1,000 for information that leads to both the arrests and convictions of those responsible.
