The partial federal government shutdown that started early Saturday now may not resolve until Thursday at the earliest.
The Senate adjourned for Christmas on Saturday afternoon without figuring out how to end the shutdown which is basically about President Donald Trump’s $5 billion demand for a US-Mexico border wall. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says the plan now is for the chamber to meet at 3 pm Central time Thursday unless a deal is hammered out before then between Republicans, Democrats and the President.
ABC News says the inability to finish a funding plan has essentially shut down a quarter of the federal government. The full list of departments affected:
*Department of the Treasury
*Department of Agriculture
*Homeland Security Department
*Department of the Interior
*Department of State
*Department of Housing and Urban Development
*Department of Transportation
*Department of Commerce
*Department of Justice
Dozens of federal agencies are also closed, according to CNBC. The shutdown has also left over 400,000 federal workers without pay and another 380,000 furloughed just before Christmas.
There are several federal offices in Emporia.
*USDA office at 3020 West 18th
*Social Security office at 3010 West 18th
*Army Reserve Center at 1412 East Sixth
*US Marines recruiting office inside Flinthills Mall.
In addition, US Fish and Wildlife Services has an office in Hartford near the Flint Hills Wildlife Refuge. The Army Corps of Engineers also handles water flow issues along the Neosho River and maintains larger lakes including John Redmond Reservoir in Coffey County and Melvern Lake in Osage County. The Department of the Interior also operates the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve north of Strong City.
This is the third partial to complete federal shutdown this year, including episodes in January and February.
