AAA East Central is warning drivers that just because your New Year’s buzz might have worn off, does not mean it is safe to get behind the wheel.
Along with driving drunk being a major concern after New Year’s parties, AAA representatives are raising awareness of another danger, driving hungover. That’s right, just because you may have slept off those drinks you had while ringing in the New Year does not mean it is okay for you to drive.
According to a press release from AAA East Central, many of the symptoms from a hangover are in fact similar to symptoms one would experience while intoxicated. This includes decreased ability to concentrate, dizziness or a sense of a room spinning, nausea and shakiness.
Other symptoms include headaches, fatigue, increased sensitivity to light and sound, stomach pains and muscle aches.
If you are traveling for New Years and plan to be drinking it is advised to have transportation plans prepared ahead. This includes designating a driver, taking a cab or a ride share or utilizing public transit options.
If you are planning to host a party there are also several precautions you may take to help stop anyone from driving drunk or hungover. These precautions include taking keys from relatives or individuals who have been drinking, providing non-alcoholic beverages for designated drivers, or providing overnight accommodations for guests who are or plan to be drinking.
