Emporia Fire and EMS crews were called out to 14 East Street shortly before 8 pm Monday for a report of smoke. Batallion Chief Eron Steinlage says upon arrival crews discovered heavy smoke inside the house.
The cause of the smoke was a small fire inside of a ceiling tile which crews quickly extinguished upon entering the home. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
There was nobody inside the home at the time of the fire. According to Steinlage the owner of the residence returned home and discovered the smoke and called the fire department.
