Outgoing Mayor Danny Giefer delivered the state of the city speech during the Emporia City Commission’s meeting Wednesday night.
The speech highlighted the accomplishments of the city of Emporia throughout 2018, which Giefer declared during his speech was “a busy year for the community.” In early 2018 the Commission and City Staff met in several meetings to update goals and strategies through 2020.
Giefer says one major focus will be continuing to wisely use money within the budget to update city infrastructure. He explains one way to accomplish this goal is to survey areas beneath the surface before attempting to update the surface itself.
During the City’s business meeting Wednesday evening the commission unanimously voted for Jon Geitz to succeed Giefer as Mayor of Emporia for 2019. Giefer will now serve on the commission as Vice-Mayor.
After the meeting concluded Wednesday evening Mayor Geitz pointed out a desire to see an increase in community relations between the City and it’s residents. Giefer shares this opinion and believes while the Commission is heavily involved in the community he too would like to see more in the way of communication between City administrators and those they serve.
Giefer concluded the state of the city speech by stating “over the past year I have truly enjoyed serving as your Mayor. It has been an honor for me. I look forward to working with the present commission in the upcoming year.”
