Chase County and Osage City emerged as champions of the 2019 Flint Hills Shootout Tournament Saturday.
In the girl’s championship, Chase County would manage to overcome an early deficit to outscore Northern Heights 56-44. The Lady Bulldogs would carry a 23-11 lead into halftime and continued to build upon it as they would never trail to the Wildcats in the second.
Northern Heights would manage to come within eight but were unable to catch up as Chase County would go onto to capture their first Flint Hills League Title.
Chase County Junior Landry Hinkson says the tournament presented some great tests for their team heading into to the back half of the season.
Senior Maya Eidman says some first quarter adjustments helped them overcome a slow start.
Head coach Ron Slaymaker says defense was the key to his team’s victory.
Chase County was led in scoring by Hinkson with 12 points. Northern Heights junior Khylee Massey led all scoring with 21 points.
In the boy’s championship game Osage City would manage to break away from Council Grove on the way to a 52-38 win.
The score would be even at 15 at the end of the first quarter before Osage City would go on a 14-5 run in the second and never look back en route to the league championship.
Senior Trenton Plinsky says it feels good to go out on top.
Sophomore Gunnar Fort says they set their offense up well.
Head coach Dennis Fort says his team showed great improvement throughout the tournament.
Osage City was led in scoring by Plintsky with 16 points. Freshman Kellen Marshall led Council Grove with 12 points all coming from beyond the three-point arc.
