This upcoming Saturday, the Lyon County League will crown its basketball tournament champions.
The tournament has seen a host of changes since it was first hosted in 1921. One of those changes has been in the lineup, with Allen, Admire, Americus, Bushong, Hartford, Miller, Neosho Rapids and Reading the original schools to participate. Another has been with the location, although you may not know it because White Auditorium has been the host site since 1941. Longtime tourney director Ted Vannocker detailed some of the location changes on KVOE’s Newsmaker segment Monday.
The tournament then moved to Admire and spent a year at Bushong before coming to White Auditorium in 1941.
Vannocker thanked auditorium staff for their hard work in making the tournament enjoyable every year. He also thanked the original tournament organizers for their foresight in setting up the event. And he reflected on why it has been important for him to be involved for almost 40 years.
First-round games take place Monday and Tuesday. Consolation semifinals are up Thursday, with championship semifinals on Friday. Saturday will see the seventh-place, fifth-place, third-place and championship games.
