Is sitting the new smoking, as is commonly said nowadays? Dr. Jen of ESU has some input on the subject.
Dr. Jennifer Thomas is an associate professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at Emporia State. More people are sitting for extended periods of time, and while it doesn’t quite equate to smoking, Dr. Jen says the issue is that so much of the population sits for too long and we’re seeing health problems across the board because of it.
Dr. Jen goes over some of the top problems associated with over-sitting.
Along with these issues, increased risks of diabetes and colon and endometrial cancer have also been linked. Sitting for long periods can cause insulin’s ability to move glucose to decrease, cholesterol can increase, and vascular functions can be reduced. Dr. Jen talks about the higher risks of cancer.
