Kids from around the area came to the Lyon County History Center on Saturday for a special birthday party — the state’s birthday party.
The History Center opened its doors for about 90 minutes strictly for its Kansas Day Birthday Bash, an event co-sponsored by the History Center, Cradle to Career Literacy Center and Parents as Teachers. Curator Lisa Soller says this was a great way for kids to learn about history and enjoy the process at the same time.
Soller also said it was important to have a wide range of activities for a simple reason: people learn in different ways.
The official day Kansas became a state was Jan. 29, 1961.
Activities on Saturday included face painting, crafts, the running of the J. Warren Brinkman miniature train, refreshments, a scavenger hunt and both furs and live animals from the David Traylor Zoo.
Up next for the Historical Society is its 81st annual meeting Feb. 12.
