Things went smoothly for Westar Energy as the utility handled a planned power outage east of Emporia on Friday.
So smoothly, in fact, that crews wrapped up their work earlier than expected. Here’s company spokesperson Gina Penzig:
Penzig tells KVOE News the goal was system maintenance, and the transmission line involved was due for some significant work.
Crews conducted the planned outage for nearly 1,300 customers in and around Hartford, Neosho Rapids, Olivet, Waverly and BETO Junction, performing system maintenance to increase reliability in eastern Lyon County, most of Coffey County and southern Osage County. Several rural electric cooperatives, like Lyon-Coffey, were also impacted.
4 pm Friday: Westar’s planned outage ends earlier than expected
Westar Energy’s three-hour planned power outage got done earlier than expected.
Crews conducted the planned outage for nearly 1,300 customers in and around Hartford, Neosho Rapids, Olivet, Waverly and BETO Junction, performing system maintenance to increase reliability in eastern Lyon County, most of Coffey County and southern Osage County. Several rural electric cooperatives, like Lyon-Coffey, were also impacted although initial numbers of affected customers are not immediately available.

12:45 pm Friday: Westar begins planned outage near Emporia
Westar Energy’s planned power outage is now underway.
Crews began work around 12:30 pm, performing system maintenance on a transmission line. Work should end around 3:30 pm.
The outage affects Hartford, Neosho Rapids, Olivet, Waverly and BETO Junction along with nearby rural areas. Nearly 1,300 Westar Energy customers are affected. Several rural electric cooperatives, like Lyon-Coffey, are also impacted.
