The 2019 Kansas Teacher of the Year delegation made a stop at Emporia State University on Friday.
Teacher of the Year Whitney Morgan is an English Language Arts and English for Speakers of Other Languages teacher at Wyandotte High School in Kansas City. She was asked the basic question: why teach?
Morgan called the Teacher of the Year honor humbling, and she was grateful for what she called a “team approach” for the delegation, which included seven other teachers. She says new teachers may feel overwhelmed by their duties, but somebody is always nearby to help.
Morgan has noticed a lot of passion with education students as the delegation continues across Kansas. She says that’s good to see.
As part of their time on campus, the eight-teacher panel had a presentation for pre-service education majors and answered a range of questions from close to 100 students.
The Teacher of the Year program is organized by the Kansas State Department of Education. The 2020 selection process is underway with two Emporia Middle School teachers, Shely Perez and Robert Ovsak, nominated by Emporia Public Schools.
