The prospect of light icing has prompted the National Weather Service to expand the coverage area of winter weather advisories for the KVOE listening area after extending the length of those advisories earlier in the day.
All counties in the KVOE listening area are now in an advisory:
*Lyon, Coffey and Osage counties are under an advisory until noon Wednesday
*Morris and Wabaunsee counties are in an advisory until 9 pm tonight Tuesday
*Chase and Greenwood counties are in an advisory until 9 am tomorrow Wednesday
Patchy freezing drizzle began falling across the area shortly after 6 am. There were several crashes areawide through the morning and afternoon hours:
*A Lyndon woman was hospitalized in Topeka after a crash in Shawnee County just before 10:30 am. The Kansas Highway Patrol says 60-year-old Sherry Harbert was a passenger in a car driven by 28-year-old Brittany Harbert of Lawrence. The younger Harbert was northbound on US Highway 75 and trying to negotiate a ramp near Interstate 470, but she spun out and hit the bridge wall. Both were taken to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka for treatment.
*An injury crash was reported around 9:20 am almost 25 miles southwest of Emporia on the Kansas Turnpike. A car driven by 57-year-old Sheri Lynn Hartley of Perry, Okla., tried to pass a semi driven by 40-year-old Edgar Enrique Villegas of El Paso, Texas, but Hartley lost control due to speed and road conditions. Hartley’s car then hit the center barrier wall before hitting the semi, and a car driven by Elizabeth Ortiz of Appleton, Wisc., then hit Hartley’s car. Hartley was taken to Newman Regional Health for treatment.
*Just before 7 am, a car and SUV collided on US 400 about two miles west of Fall River. The Highway Patrol says an eastbound car driven by 54-year-old Michael Allen of Wichita hit a westbound SUV driven by 47-year-old Robert Graham of Fall River. Allen was taken to Fredonia Medical Center, while Graham was hospitalized although the crash log does not say where. Both suffered suspected serious injuries.
In terms of road conditions locally, City Street Supervisor Mike Dvorak tells KVOE News the roads are clear for the most part, however, they are currently taking a wait and see approach to see if any major treatment will be necessary Tuesday evening. At the county level, crews went out shortly before noon today to salt and sand some roadways.

5 am-noon Tuesday: Several rounds of wintry precipitation possible this week; winter weather advisories now underway
Light icing may be possible Tuesday morning and again later in the day through Wednesday morning.
TV-13 meteorologist Doug Meyers anticipates patchy freezing drizzle to develop by mid-morning Tuesday, meaning there could be some isolated slick spots through late morning or early afternoon.
Another batch of patchy freezing drizzle or freezing rain could develop by mid- to late afternoon and continue off and on into Wednesday morning. By late morning Wednesday, temperatures should be above freezing, so any freezing drizzle or freezing rain should turn to straight rain. There is a chance we could see a wintry mix of freezing drizzle, freezing rain, snow and sleet develop Wednesday night.
A winter weather advisory affects Lyon, Coffey and Osage counties through noon Wednesday. A separate advisory affects Chase and Greenwood counties is now underway through 9 am Wednesday.
