Despite a damp February, the fire danger is revving up south of Emporia this week.
The National Weather Service Wichita office is calling for a very high fire danger Wednesday, especially south of US Highway 50, as temperatures climb to near 60 degrees and southerly winds reach 30 mph. A wind advisory is now up for Greenwood County until 4 pm.
A repeat is possible Thursday with temperatures in the upper 50s and southerly winds as high as 25 mph.
The KVOE listening area just picked up 0.30 inches of rainfall Monday, and area residents have also dealt with light snow and freezing drizzle earlier this month. Because this current winter season has been much wetter than the past three winter seasons, including up to 18 inches of snow since November and over an inch of rain in January, the area grass fire season has not started after already being well underway the past few winters.
